College of Humanities & Social Sciences

College of Humanities and Social Sciences is where academic knowledge for seeking veritas and solving social problems is learned in a systematic way. Humanities is a creative way of expression that portrays the values of human nature, whereas social sciences seeks to explore and promote public values and orders for the sustainable development of communities. In the ‘global era’, it is greatly needed to enhance the mutual understanding between states and peoples and to promote global knowledge. The College of Humanities and Social Sciences seeks to develop programs that are optimal to teach and educate creative, professional and future oriented students who have insights to the opportunities in the fourth industrial revolution and to the human crises causing therefrom and develop themselves through adapting and challenging to the society and finally changing the society. As of 2017, there are 49 professors in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences who are devoting themselves to foster future leaders not only in academia but also in many fields of society including media, culture and industries and to serve as a driving force developing sound culture and knowledge of the society. Furthermore, the College is trying to have ‘problem solving oriented global academic network’ prepared and aims at world-class academic achievement by actively involving in various exchange programs with top tier universities abroad.

Division of Humanity

Division of Humanities of Suwon University provides an opportunity to study various academic departments, and thereby enables to build capacities and professionalism to produce creative outcomes that meet the need of changing society.

The department of Korean Language and Literature consists of Korean linguistics, classical Korean literature and modern Korean literature. Each curriculum of the specific fields will let students gain essential and advanced knowledge of the field by completing the curriculum step by step, which will enable them to serve as a major in Korean language and literature. Students can also build their humanistic insights that are required in our daily lives and gain interdisciplinary knowledge as well. Furthermore, they can build their own plans suitable to their own aptitudes and visions by participating in group activities.

Department of History aims to build a systematic and proper understanding of history by taking an analytic and critical approach to various fields of history including Korean history, Oriental history and Western history. The department also helps students to build capacities for reasonable thinking and provide visions for a desirable future society. Graduates of the department develop their careers in various fields including education, archival management and curation.

Major in Korean Language & Literature

In the Department of Korean Language and Literature, the characteristics of Korean language and writings are the major parts of the research. The formalities and beauty of the Korean texts and the significance therein are also studied. In order to conduct these studies successfully, the Department provides curriculum based on Korean linguistics, classical Korean literature and modern Korean literature with additional applied interdisciplinary studies. Each curriculum of the specific fields will let students gain essential and advanced knowledge of the field by completing the curriculum step by step, which will enable them to serve as a major in Korean language and literature. Students can also build their humanistic insights that are required in our daily lives and gain interdisciplinary knowledge as well. Furthermore, they can build their own plans suitable to their own aptitudes and visions by participating in group activities.

Major in History

21st Century is the age of culture, and along with the change of times cultural desire has increased. Against this backdrop, Department of History sets up systematic program of development as follows. First, it lays special importance on Korean modern and contemporary history and the history of North Korea, which is required of us in our time and is also necessary for the Department to be a leading university in the Northeast Asia. Second, the Department is trying to strengthen the relationship with local community by opening a course on the history of Gyeonggi province. Third, it fosters future leaders who can well adapt in the era when local government gains importance by actively engaging with local communities, for example setting up sisterhood agreement with Suwon Cultural Center, Hwaseong Cultural Center, etc.

Division of Foreign Languages

Division of Foreign Languages of Suwon University aims to develop humanistic abilities that enable us to understand our mind and lives and foster professionals with competent language skills in the era of information-oriented society and globalization by studying various languages and cultures around the world.

In the Department of English Language and Literature, English linguistics and literature are to be studied on the basis of the understanding of and practical skills in English as lingua franca. Furthermore, by widening the understanding of Anglo American culture, the Department seeks to develop fluent English and international manner required in international society.

Graduates of the Department of French Language and Literature are playing active roles in many fields of society including academia, media, tourism industry, trade, etc. Especially, graduates are serving important roles as professionals in francophonic regions including western Africa such as Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire, Congo, Togo, Cameroon.

Department of Russian Language and Literature seeks to educate specialists in Russia and CIS regions which serve a pivotal role in the development of global economy, politics, society and civilization and which also have unlimited possibilities to create synergetic effect with South Korea. The Department provides customized curriculum which allows students to develop their language abilities step by step. By doing so it seeks to develop practical qualifications required in a rapidly changing international order and ability to effectively perform their tasks. It runs a comprehensive educational program consisting of language, culture, politics, economics and history, applicable in practice, by combining linguistic knowledge and background knowledge about specific regions.

Department of Japanese Language and Literature aims at improving practical Japanese language skills by teaching conversation, writing and reading. Moreover, Japanese culture, lifestyle and history are also taught so that knowledge regarding Japanese society can be widened. Advanced courses are also included in the curriculum so as to foster specialists with academic knowledge. Double major or minor courses are also recommended to Japanese majors to gain knowledges from various fields. Exchange programs with Japanese universities as well as student activity programs such as Japanese culture clubs will also provide students with an opportunity to improve their understanding of Japan and Japanese culture.

Department of Chinese Language and Literature aims to ensure the development of communication skills in Chinese which serves as a basis in understanding China in general. In the Department, students will study classical Chinese literature, contemporary literature, linguistics as well as subjects regarding Chinese politics, economics, culture and theories to broaden the understanding of China and its culture. On the basis of these professional qualifications, the Department expects to nurture specialists who contribute themselves to exchanges between Korea and China and global leaders with international insights who play active roles in East Asia.

Major in English Language & Literature)

In the Department of English Language and Literature, English linguistics and literature are to be studied on the basis of the understanding of and practical skills in English as lingua franca. Therefore, it aims to nurture specialists who are necessary and versatile in international society by improving English communicating skills. Furthermore, by studying English linguistics such as phonetics, syntax, semantics and pragmatics, students are expected to improve their abilities to analyze, problem solving skills, creativity that are required of them in the era of fourth industrial revolution and artificial intelligence. The Department also seeks to foster future leaders who have a broad understanding of Anglo American cultures, capacities to develop and understand Korean cultural heritage and contents and imaginative thinking needed in the society of artificial intelligence by studying Anglo American literatures including poems, novels, plays and essays.

 

Major in French Language & Literature

Department of French Language and Literature seeks to foster specialists who can participate in international exchanges with knowledge of France, French culture and language skills. With double or dual major programs in which other majors can be studied along with French language and literature, students can develop multiple language skills. There are also intensive language programs designed to prepare for DELF and DALF which is necessary to enhance students’ language skills.

Major in Russian Language & Literature(Area Studies)

Department of Russian Language and Literature seeks to educate specialists who can respond to rapidly changing world politics, industries, economy and environment in the 21st century and at the same time have insights to foresee possible changes in society by educating language and comprehensive knowledge regarding Russia which is one of the four major powers around Korean peninsula and serves a pivotal role in world politics and economy and other major CIS countries. The Department intends to organically combine language skills and background knowledge about the region so as to foster specialists equipped with language and professional regional knowledge. In order to develop practical skills efficient in real life, customized language curriculum is prepared in which language applicable in trade, investment, foreign exchange, interpretation and translation is studied and practiced.

Major in Japanese Language & Literature

The Department of Japanese Language and Literature was initiated in March 1992 with a night time program and affiliated with College of Humanities in 1999 changing into a day time. There are 7 full-time professors, including 4 Korean and 3 Japanese professors as of 2018, and various courses are open to students. The Department provides courses such as Japanese conversation, writing to improve practical Japanese language skills as well as special topics on Japanese, Japanese literature, phonetics to nurture specialists in Japanese. In addition, it seeks to enhance students’ knowledge and understanding about Japanese society by studying Japanese culture, lifestyle, history, etc. The Department has its own characteristics; first, it actively involves in foreign exchange programs with Japanese universities by running exchange students programs, short-term training program and exchange music festivals with the universities in sisterhood relationships; second, student activities are facilitated, as plays and songs are performed in Japanese in annual festivals and Japanese culture clubs are open to those who are interested in Japan; third, local residents are also invited to the Festival in May with traditional Japanese entertainments and foods prepared where local people can experience Japanese culture along with students. Being over 50 years after the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and Korea (2015), the roles and responsibilities that the Department should assume are increasing.

Major in Chinese Language & Literature

Department of Chinese Language and Literature was established as department of Chinese Language in 1992 and has 764 graduates for 24 years. The Department has endeavored to foster global leaders with international insight and Chinese experts who contribute to cultural exchanges between Korea and China on the basis of ‘frugality, creativity, justice’ which are the founding spirit of the Suwon University. Furthermore, the Department provides various courses and programs that combine Chinese studies and other relative fields to nurture persons that can think in a comprehensive and creative way. Especially, through various exchange programs with universities in China, many students are having opportunities to develop global insights by experiencing China and communicating with Chinese students. Most of the students in this Department can freely choose a university in China including Nankai University or Shanghai Jiao Tong University to visit as an exchange student for 6 months or a year with scholarship, and those who are selected can apply for a dual degree course (2+2) at Nanjing University and Shandong University.

Division of Law & Public Administration

Division of Law and Public Administration under College of Humanities and Social Sciences was initiated in March 2017 by combining Department of Law and Public Administration under College of Law to foster creative students through interdisciplinary studies. Students are to take courses in general studies and basic major courses in the first year and required to decide their major in the second year. Other programs such as multiple majors, dual majors, minor, associated majors, fusion major, student planning majors, etc. are also available.

Majoir in Law provides theoretical background to lawyers who will realize rule of law, public officials who assume pivotal roles in the society and other people in various fields (law school, graduate school, judicial scrivener, certified labor consultant, financial institutions, incorporates, research institutes, etc). Public Administration has its primary goal in fostering leaders in public sector(public officials), and also endeavors to provide labor forces who are needed in private sector or NGOs. Classes to prepare for Civil Service Examination are open to every students in Public Administration major, and curricula for license exams such as administration management or survey analyst are also prepared.

Major in Law

Law is the study of logics which interprets human behavior on the basis of legal norms and finally seeks to establish fair and just system of law in the society. Modern civilized society requires law without which there cannot be any order in social systems and relations including not only minor relationships but also national systems. Major in Law aims to foster future leaders who will devote themselves to the development of the State and society by teaching students to build an insight, legal mind and sound values. Therefore, it emphasizes the education of practical legal knowledge which properly combines legal theory and practice.

Major in Public Administration

Public Administration has its primary goal in fostering leaders in public sector such as public officials, municipal public officials, etc. It also endeavors to provide students with knowledges in personal and general affairs, management that are needed in private sector or NGOs. Curricula for license exams such as administration management or survey analyst are also prepared.

Department of Public Administration(n)

행정학과에서는 국가공무원, 지방공무원, 공기업/공사 종사자 국가 지역 공공 인재를 양성하는 일차적인 목표를 두고 있다. 뿐만 아니라, 인사, 총무 경영지원 전략기획 관련 직무 수행에 도움을 주는 교과를 제공하여 민간부문(중소·중견·대기업 ) NGO 부문으로의 학생 진출을 도모하고 있다. 행정학에서는 행정 관리사나 정책분석평가사 등의 자격증을 취득하는데 도움이 되는 커리큘럼을 갖추고 있다.

Department of Media Communication

Department of Media Communication endeavors to foster core human resources in the field of media by balanced education covering theories and practice in both traditional fields such as newspapers, magazine, broadcast and strategic communication fields including advertisement, PR and new media. The Department provides optimal educational and practical programs to nurture creative and professional leaders who understand the characteristics of various types of media and have capacity to plan and produce relevant contents.

College of Economics & Business Administration

College of Economics and Business Administration began as the department of economics and business administration in 1981, and after Suwon University was elevated as a university the Division of Hotel and Tourism was newly established, which is the structure of the College nowadays. Despite its relatively short history, there are various programs including three undergraduate courses (economics, business administration, hotel and tourism), masters and ph.d courses, MBA, Graduate School of Hotel and Tourism, Graduate School of Employment and Service, Golf CEO Course, etc. The College aims to foster a ‘Glocal Leader’ who proactively leads the age of internationalization and adapts to rapidly changing international environment.

Division of Economics

Division of Economics of Suwon University aims to foster future leaders required of in the global economic environment with proactive and creative leadership. In the Division, there are a major in ‘Economics and Finance’ and a major in ‘International Development and Cooperation’, and students can learn not only professional knowledge in economics and finance but also get opportunities to experience on- site education.

‘Economics and Finance’ major provides economic and financial knowledge necessary for the development of local community and national economy as well as necessary for individual lives, and enables students to improve their insights to understand actual economy and financial environment and predict future economy. In the global economic environment based on market economy, economics and finance are indivisible. Therefore the Division is covering both advanced economics such as micro and macro economics, labor, industrial economics and financial education including corporate finance, financial economics, international finance, financial market analysis at the same time so as to react to rapidly changing economic environment. Moreover, the Division seeks to nurture sound economists and specialists who satisfy labor demand in the multiplied economic fields and assume an important role with practical abilities. Graduates of the division can be found in various fields including bank, insurance company, securities company, as well as government offices and public corporations.

‘International Development and Cooperation’ major aims to foster global leaders who will proactively work in the field of international development and cooperation which is recently expanding globally. Republic of Korea, which is the only country that used to be a donee but became one of the doners, is one of the leading countries that assume a great role in international development and cooperation and needs more and more participants. This major, established in 2012 as the first major in Korea, seeks to foster small number of well-educated students who are competent in international context. Graduates from 2016 are working in institutions they like including KOICA, NGOs, government offices, etc. Students of this major continuously and regularly consult with supervisors, and take relevant classes, experience various activities, do volunteer services and learn foreign languages. Professors with various international experience support students to apply their academic knowledge and experience in career development.

Major in Economics & Finance

In the global economic circumstances based on the market economy, economics and finance cannot be divided. The department aims not only to teach economic theories but also to foster capabilities to analyze and predict accurately the economic and financial trends of the national and international economy. It prepares students to understand and cope with rapidly changing economic circumstances through economic educations such as Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Labor Economy, Industrial Economy, Economics of Public Finance, Urban Economy, Environmental Economics, and financial educations such as Financial Institution, Business Finance, Money Economy, International Finance. It also encourages students to become professionals in their fields and play the role of social leaders with moral obligations to society.

Major in International Development Cooperation

As Korea is an exceptional country of an aid recipient turned to a high-income country, it plays an important role in international society. In recent days, the Korean government and private organizations cooperate with developing countries in many different fields. As a result, employment in the field of international development cooperation has grown continuously. The department was established as the first institute in the university of the country in 2012 in order to produce human resources, and it has educated a small number of selected students systematically. There were the first graduate students in 2016 and the graduates achieved 100 percent employment rate in 2016 and 2017.

The department of Business Administration teaches administrative ways of thought, basic knowledges, and process of rational decision making. It aims to train students for the real business world and cultivate human resources who will work as promising professional business administrators, deal actively with the rapidly changing business circumstances and information society, and contribute to the development of the country.

Major in Business Administration

The Business Administration, as one field of social science dealing with social phenomena, aims rational and strategic administration of business. The department of Business Administration teaches administrative ways of thought, basic knowledges, and process of rational decision making. It aims to train students for the real business world and cultivate human resources who will work as promising professional business administrators, deal actively with the rapidly changing business circumstances and information society, and contribute to the development of the country.

Major in Accounting

Accounting is called the language of business. It helps people to understand what is happening inside of business and assesses how a business is doing. Without a proper accounting system, it is impossible to make investment decisions. The department aims to produce accounting specialists. Although it is not easy to take accounting classes compared to other departments, students who complete the courses become more competitive.

Major in Global Business

The major aims to foster human resources who have the knowledge, sense, ethics and morale of international business in the global age. It encourages students to acquire knowledge of global business and learn foreign languages. Freshmen are required to take a capstone design class and a career exploration class, and learn English and Chinese. Sophomores are required to take courses in their major fields and acquire academic knowledge. The curriculum includes international business, international economy, international marketing, international finance, international trade, e-business, international business ethics, and practical training such as seminars on international business and field work in national and international business companies.

Division of Hotel & Tourism

The division aims to educate and foster professionals and leaders who are creative and confident, and can lead international hotel industry. Hotel Management takes the concept of “service”, which plays the role of basic infrastructure of tourism industry, and whose importance is growing rapidly, as a core element of creating values. The cultivation of professionals in hotel industry is urgently required in national competitiveness. The major has programs to educate and foster professionals and leaders who are creative and confident, and can lead hotel management industry.

Restaurant Management aims to cultivate human resources who will lead the industry of dining out professionally and creatively. Several economic and social indexes such as increase of income, nuclear family, and economically active women anticipate the growth of dining out in recent days. Therefore, it teaches business process of dining out, and specific knowledge of cooking, food, and nutrition, and aims to produce professionals who will contribute to the development of feeding and dining out.

Tourism Management aims to cultivate professional human resources. Tourism management is the most promising industry which is expected to satisfy desires of various kinds of people. In the age of experience tourism, theme park industry, including entertainment, shopping, beverage and food, and transport, is becoming more important as an overall consensus of tourism. Tourism industry in the modern society is recognized as a big industry and the major element of attracting tourists which can stimulate the development of the local community and the related industries. The major focuses on cultivating professionals who contributes to tourism industry, theme park, convention, casino and service industry.

Major in Restaurant Management

The major aims to cultivate human resources who will lead the industry of dining out professionally and creatively. Several economic and social indexes such as increase of income, nuclear family, and economically active women anticipate the growth of dining out in recent days. Therefore, it teaches business process of dining out, and specific knowledge of cooking, food, and nutrition, and aims to produce professionals who will contribute to the development of feeding and dining out.

College of Engineering

Engineering is the application of knowledge of science including mathematics, chemistry, physics and biology and it helps to improve the quality of life. In recent days, there is more emphasis on creative and integrated engineering education in order to cope with the fourth industrial revolution. The college was established in 1982, the same year in which the University of Suwon was founded and the College of Natural Sciences including the department of Chemistry, Physics, Bioscience and Biotechnology were merged into the college. As a result, it has seven colleges and fifteen majors. About 15,000 square meters of NIX was also erected in 2017. It tries to constantly improve its curriculum, to expand research infrastructures and to produce creative and active engineers who will lead the fourth industrial revolution.

Division of Biochemical Industry

Bioscience is the study of living things. The division aims to acquire knowledge of bioscience through lectures and practice and it encourages students to be a leader of science. In addition, students have a chance to double major in Biomarketing and Chemistry and they are expected to enter Graduate School of Education and Pharmacy after graduation.

Biotechnology is a technology to take advantage of an organism or organic system in order to improve our life and environment. The division helps to develop and sell bioproducts using knowledge of biotechnology. It focuses especially on biomedicine, functional foods, cosmetics and fermented food in order to cope with bioproduct market. It also encourages learning foreign languages and understanding marketing to produce biomarketing professionals.

Chemistry is a primary science that studies substances and changes of substances in the universe. It is necessary to gain knowledge of biology, medicine, pharmacy, food science, environment, architecture and material engineering, and is closely related to changes in nature and society. In practice, it is associated with daily life and plays an important role in science and technology. Graduates are expected to work in pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries and national and public research institutes, and to study at graduate schools.

Major in Bioscience

Bioscience is the study of living things. The major aims to acquire knowledge of bioscience through lectures and practice and it encourages students to be a leader of science. It also helps students to be creative and active through various education including lectures, discussions, seminars, experiments and internships. In addition, students have a chance to double major in Biomarketing and Chemistry and they are expected to enter Graduate School of Education and Pharmacy after graduation.

Major in Biotechnology & Biomarketing

Biotechnology is a technology to take advantage of an organism or organic system in order to improve our life and environment. The major helps to develop and sell bioproducts using knowledge of biotechnology. The department aims to provide students with systematic education which can develop performance skills of various musical instruments in the orchestra of students and help them to comprehend diverse musical theories. It also helps students to develop their skills with diverse activities such as ensemble performances and orchestral workshops. It also aims to foster leaders in orchestras and musical groups.

Department of Korean Traditional Music

The department aims not only to understand and succeed to musical and cultural aspects of Korean traditional music but also to create more future-oriented traditional music. Thus, it aims to foster musicians who can promote Korean traditional music all over the world with creative views on it. It provides undergraduate students with specified majors: string instruments major of gayageum, geomungo, and ajayng, wind instruments major of daykeum, pili, and haykeum, and Korean traditional vocal music major of pansoli, minyo, jeongga, and gayageum byeongchang. Students have a chance to develop their skills on various periodical stages provided by the department such as the annual concert and spring and autumn concerts. Students have cultivated their abilities greatly with high recognition thanks to their remarkable accomplishments in various renowned contests and concours under full support by the university and the faculty.

The college puts an emphasis on research on original and competitive global contents through academic fusion to foster creative and cooperative students for future society.

It consists of four majors: Film and Digital Arts, Theater, Dance, and Culture and Contents Technology. It aims to provide students with such education as is able to help them to fuse diverse brand new cultural industries and to lead culture and art industry in the future on the basis of traditional art education.

Division of Arts & Culture

The major in films and digital arts aims to provide students with such education as supplies students with creative and systematic producing practices in field work of directing, making, film shooting, lighting, writing scenarios, editing, and special effecting with digital technology and with critical thoughts through reasonable analysis of the work.

The graduates are involved in fields of making and teaching films with remarkable accomplishments in various film contests and festivals.

he major in theater aims to provide students with an ability to deliver the spirit of and make a research on works through basic comprehension and drill of acting in plays, films and TV dramas.

The curriculum also covers the courses for history of playing arts, diverse analyses of works, management of voice, sympathy, and communication, and acting. The graduates are actively involved in lots of plays, dramas and films.

The major in dance aims to foster leaders in culture and arts in modern society through balanced education between theories and practices in dance. Thus, it makes an attempt to introduce a new curriculum to balance two parts and enhance chances for original performances. The graduates work in various places: schools, various dance companies such as the national dance company and the national ballet company, and such related fields as dance directing, dance make-up, dance therapy, yoga and pilates.

The major in culture and contents technology aims to foster leaders in culture and contents technology with the best educational facilities in Seoul metropolitan area such as fusion media research center, VR-AR-MR center, and digital production center.

The major provides students with a chance to develop humanistic refinement, an ability to tell stories through screens and to manage 3D graphic techniques for animation, web-contents and ads on airs. It especially puts an emphasis on developing an ability to apply such high-tech technologies as VR, AR and MR to cultural contents with freedom and ease.

It has made an agreement with many institutions to exchange faculty and students and to cooperate on development of an integrated curriculum which may produce experts in the 4th Industry.
